Review: Killer Instinct by Jennifer Lynn Barnes (The Naturals #2)

Killer Instinct - Jennifer Lynn Barnes

Note: This review is of an ARC copy received at BEA 2014. I was not paid to write this review.

In the first book, The Naturals, Cassie had just joined a group of gifted teens as a profiler, and they embarked on a case where the serial killer had his/her eyes set on Cassie. This time around in Killer Instinct by Jennifer Lynn Barnes, Dean, Cassie’s fellow profiler, is the focus as a copycat goes out and kills in the identical fashion as his incarcerated father. The big question: who’s really calling the shots? and will Dean survive going into his father’s head again?

The mystery itself was very full of twists. Many leads ended up in dead ends, and Dean, Cassie, Lia, Sloane, and Michael kept hitting road blocks due to restrictions and even each other. Additionally, the agents continuously tried to keep them off of the active case.

What I truly loved about Killer Instinct, though, was how I got to learn about the mysterious Dean and his relationship with everyone. He was the first and the start of the program, making him quite the enigma. You find out about Dean’s father’s case and many of the horrors he’s experienced. You even find out how the Director of the FBI actually feels about him. Ultimately, I fell in love with Dean.

Through all this drama, Cassie’s love triangle comes to an end. She picks one and looses another. I feel for the boy that didn’t get chosen, but I also kind of saw it coming. Boy, am I not a fan of love triangles. I’m glad it’s over, but I hope the resulting tension isn’t too terrible in any books to come.

All-in-all, I loved Killer Instinct by Jennifer Lynn Barnes as I did with the first book, The Naturals. Jennifer Lynn Barnes definitely didn’t disappoint. 4.5 stars overall. I’d highly suggest reading this series if you love fast paced YA mystery/thrillers with a psychological twist to it.
